Less-is-Better Effect

A small complete set can beat a large incomplete one.

The tendency to prefer a smaller complete set over a larger incomplete set when each is evaluated individually even though the larger set contains everything the smaller set has.

Why it matters: Demonstrated by Hsee. Shows that evaluation mode affects preferences.

Evaluate options by their absolute value not by their shortcomings.

Real-world example

Preferring a complete set of 24 high-quality dishes over a 40-piece set that is missing 4 matching pieces even though the 40-piece set includes the 24 plus extras.
